Piero della Francesca’s Madonna del Parto (c. 1455–1465) is a quietly powerful fresco depicting the Virgin Mary pregnant with Christ—one of the rare representations of the expectant Madonna in Renaissance art. She stands front and center, hand resting on her swollen belly, flanked by two angels pulling back a tent-like curtain, as if revealing a sacred mystery. The composition is symmetrical, solemn, and serene with Mary’s expression both introspective and monumental.
